"Ever git smart-mouthed with a cop again, I show you what a cop does. You unnerstand me?!"
The initial idea for this "song" came about when I heard about the case of Brett Darrow, who was pulled over and threatened by a certain Sergeant James Kuehnlein of St. George, Missouri. In St. George, to not show one's identification with fawning obsequiousness is to commit a crime for which one can be jailed based on made-up evidence. Fortunately Darrow, who had previously been assaulted by another drunken cop, had a car loaded with video cameras and so the entire incident was recorded. You can read more about the incident and watch the video here. (Kuehnlein, who had previously been charged with "assault and stealing" according to the Wikipedia, was eventually fired and a lawsuit against him and the city of St. George has been filed by the ACLU.)
The track itself was inspired by the eastern European hardcore techno I had been listening to on Last.fm around this time - or rather by my desire to write something more interesting than what I was hearing. "God-creature" is one of several of our recent tracks to feature guitar, though it's far more prominent here than on any track I've written in over 10 years. In a way this track marks a return to the style of much of the earlier (pre-)Mezzanine Stairs music: loud, dirty, and noisy. I think I'll write more like this in the future...
Anyway, 75% of the way through writing this track I thought it would make a great vehicle for the Kuehnlein samples and so I added a few of them into it; only one of them survived into the final version as the rest just didn't fit in. I had hoped to add a sample of Alex Jones referring to cops as "god-creatures" (such references being the origin of this track's title) but I haven't heard him say this in ages.
